New door buying and installation checklist
Plan door handing, opening space, threshold, glazing, hardware and installation before ordering your replacement doors.
Before ordering, agree the complete doorset, the direction it opens, the threshold, glazing, hardware and all fitting work. Use a professional survey for final measurements.
Before your appointment
Note the problem you want to fix, your postcode and the type of door. Consider privacy, daylight, security, draughts and access. Keep photographs of the entrance and designs you like ready to share if requested.
Opening direction and clearances
Confirm which side is hinged and whether the door opens in or out. Check furniture, radiators, walls and paths. For French and patio doors, discuss the clear opening and how you will use the door every day.
Threshold, glass and hardware
Review step height, drainage and the meeting point with floors. Choose glass for privacy as well as appearance. Agree handles, locks, letterplate, door number and side-panel alignment before signing off the order.
Permissions and specialist doors
Flag listed status, conservation restrictions, shared access or a flat entrance early. A standard external door must not be assumed suitable where a fire-rated or other specialist doorset is required. Get the appropriate requirements confirmed.
The written order and handover
Check the product, size, colour, glass, frame, threshold, hardware, installation scope, payment terms and guarantee. At handover, check operation with the installer and keep the care instructions and paperwork together.
